Earloop Highlights VS Underlight

Hello there! In this article, we’ll talk about the earloop highlights and underlight on a slightly deeper level with many examples and some recommendations on how to achieve a better look with this particular coloring style. And our underlight promotion at the bottom of the post, do remember to read till the end!

Based on what I have observed, this coloring style started as an Ombre Underlight, which is also called hidden colors in the US. Similar to the title of this style, the term hidden means that the hair color is hidden by the outer layer. In a more direct term, it means only the lower half of the hair on the inner layer is colored.

A large handful of you might remember this photo below. Among all the questions I received on the underlight/hidden color, this photo got shown to me the most, asking about how much to do these 3 colors on the inner layer.

It started as an Ombre Underlight, which is also called under-the-hair or underneath highlights. Initially, the coloring was only done on just the back, not on the ears or the fringe or anywhere, just the back. Slowly, more names were used to describe this kind of coloring style, such as Peekaboo highlights, and this few years, the style got enhanced to Earloop highlights which includes the earloop area too. But some might choose to only highlight the earloop area.

Basically, the idea is still the same, just that the area of coloring includes the side as well (or only the side), mainly the ear loop area and the back. The highlight of this style is the area over at the earloop.

When you comb it in such a way, it shows the color inside yet the bulk of the hair is the normal brown or your original hair color, it’s a very subtle coloring style yet attractive in its own way. Like adding truffle to french fries, now it becomes special. Truffle is being added to everything nowadays. After that, that particular food becomes special. Haha. This coloring style is on the same level of special too.

Overall, for underlight, earloop highlights, peekaboo highlights, earloop peekaboo highlights, (yes I get it, so many names, one day I shall create one truffle highlights), it belongs to the similar coloring style, which is to color the hair on the inner layer.

Let’s take a look at some of our works for such inner layer coloring style

If you want to level up the subtleness, I have one recommendation, look at this photo below.

Do you see it?

How about now?

Instead of hiding it totally, you can do some trimming on the outer layer to trim it just a tad bit shorter so that it shows the inner layer subtly. A lot can be done with a haircut, it’s all customizable, you can even cut a big V so that it shows the side too but that’s a bit too extreme. So much for being subtle. Hahaha.

Now for the most important part, if you came from our FB post, you should know about the promotion. But here are the details -

Service of the month (July 2022)

Ombre Underlight (or Earloop Highlights/Peekaboo Highlights)

At $98 for the unlimited bleaching + 1 color on the inner layer

Includes haircut, l’oreal treatment, and olaplex mini treatment

Special privilege for ladies taking up this service of the month, you will have the option to purchase both our color pigment shampoo and mask at 50% off ($34 instead of $68). Or, if you're also doing a normal dark color on the outer layer at $68, it includes the above shampoo + mask for free, all under this $68. Good deal yup? :)

I wrote about our pigment shampoo/mask back in our previous post, if you would like to know more about the product, for example, what are the colors available or ingredients, you can read it over here.

Back to the coloring, Unlimited bleaching means you can do any color that you want. Nice!

If you want to do the underlight but you don’t want to bleach your hair, you can opt for our color lifting instead. Similar to our balayage without bleaching, with the color lifting you can choose the colors from our Japan Smoky Color series, maybe a smoky rose brown underlight? Or a normal dark brown base with smoky ash brown underlight? Create your own unique combination~

This is the link for the Japan Smoky Color series for the color choices and details on the color lifting if you don’t want to bleach your hair.

Before I end the article, here are more examples of how far you can take the inner layer coloring too and what other kinds of combinations you can go for. You can even do highlights on the outer layer. Like I said above, create your own unique combination, everything is possible! Haha. Enjoy the service of the month! Stay safe and healthy!
