Have you been taught that you have to wash your hair everyday? That is neither wrong nor right but everybody has different hair structure, there is no one solution that fits all hair. The shampoo that I use might not be suitable for you and the one you are using might not be suitable for me too, so why do we stick to the belief that we have to wash our hair everyday?
Hello! My name is Zell. In this article, we’re going to talk about something really basic - how many times do you need to wash your hair. We have have been taught since young to wash your hair to prevent dirt but what are the other reasons for us to wash our hair? Should we wash it daily, twice a day, once every 2 days or once a week? When I was young, I hated the idea of washing my hair so I wash it as little as possible. I have no idea why, I just hated the idea of washing my hair. And as I was growing up, this bad habit of mine caused me to have some scalp conditions with a long period of dandruff. Guess I should have listened to my mum when she told me to wash my hair. So here I am, guiding people to wash their hair. Haha.
In my years of communicating with our customers, I realized that some of them have a misconception of washing hair and a large group of them thought washing daily is the right thing to do. Why did I say that it is a misconception? Because in general, there is no need to wash the hair everyday, unless there is a specific need to do that. For example, oily hair or certain scalp condition that requires medicated shampoo to be used on the scalp everyday.
A general rule of thumb is, the drier your hair is, the less you should wash your hair. This is because it is already dry and washing it will dry out your hair even more. The solution for dry hair is a good conditioner and hair mask. When the hair is dry, there is a lack of moisture. There has to be a balance and washing the hair everyday does not replenish the moisture. In fact, it is sucking out even more moisture from the hair. The same goes for dry scalp too. Give the hair two to three days to produce the sebum so that the sebum can act as a natural protection for the hair.
Conversely, the oilier the hair, the more you should wash your hair but in doing so, you might be drying out the hair in the long run too. The proper solution is to look for a shampoo that is suitable for your scalp condition. On a side note, if you have oily scalp but have colored hair at the same time, you can only choose one. Either you prolong the washing frequency to prevent the color from fading fast, or wash the hair daily and to have the color becoming lighter daily (if you did a color that requires bleaching). In this case, the recommendation is to treat the oily scalp first, go for a scalp treatment to help regulate the sebum (oil) secretion and you can go for the coloring.
Age plays a big part in our hair/scalp condition too. During puberty, the hormonal change will cause the sebaceous glands to produce extra oil. And as we grow older, it will produce lesser oil because of the grey strands. There is no need to wash the hair that often when it is not producing as much oil.
For people who style their hair often, for example, using wax, if you sleep with the wax on your hair, it will cause a build-up and that might cause dandruff and scalp irritation. Therefore, if you use it daily, there is a need to wash it daily.
In conclusion, it is enough to wash it every 2 to 3 days but to decide whether if you need to wash your hair everyday, you will have to first think if you really need to do that. For our customers who do coloring regularly, before you color your hair, ask yourself if you have dry, normal or oily hair? If you have normal hair and colored hair, you don’t have to wash it everyday. If you have oily hair, do look for a suitable shampoo first and also try to go for scalp treatment to regulate the oil secretion, do all these before deciding whether to color or not. And as you have more and more grey strands, the hair will start to get a little bit dry, in this situation, you can stop washing it daily but you will need a good conditioner to replenish the moisture.
