What's The Real Use Of Hair Oil?

Is your hair breaking often? You might want to audit your habits as you might have some unhealthy habits that are slowly worsening your hair condition.

Hello! My name is Zell. In this article, we’re going to talk about hair oil and the real use of it. Whenever a customer asks me about the remedy for dry hair, one of my suggestions will be that they try using hair oil. I mentioned in one of the previous articles that people with curly/wavy tend to accumulate natural oil (sebum) on their scalp as it is unable to travel down the hair smoothly. And if the natural oil is unable to travel down the hair, the part(s) of the hair without the protection of the sebum will be dry and frizzy.

And here comes the savior - the hair oil.

If you blow-dry your hair everyday with heat, I can almost guarantee that within a month, your hair is going to be really dry. Let’s imagine a drop of water on the frying pan, upon heat application, the drop of water will be vaporized.

Now, let’s use this example on our hair, what will happen to the moisture in our hair when we blow dry our hair with heat? The same will happen. And given time, with a consistent habit of using the blow dryer, the hair will become very dry. Like grass. Within a month, remember? All that said, so what’s the real use of hair oil?

It offers protection

It’s similar to wearing gloves, it covers our entire hand. Hair oil covers the hair too and also helps prevent and remedy heat and styling damage. Like a shield from the heat damage. I used to straighten my hair every day with a straightener and I have tried straightening it with and without hair oil. Without applying the hair oil before the straightening process, the hair will look straight but it’s lifeless. It looks like plastic. Not very nice.

With the hair oil applied before the straightening, the chances of retaining your hair condition are higher as there is protection against heat. Otherwise, you will be overly reliant on the hair straightener as it looks really dry without straightening it and this will be an unhealthy cycle for the hair.

It prevents breakage

Hair oil lubricates the outer layer of the hair cuticle and strengthens the core by providing moisture. By doing that, it keeps the hair bonds strong and that helps to reduce and prevent breakage.

Using a simple explanation, our hair is like many many ropes tightly bound together and each time we expose the hair to unhealthy habits or chemicals, the ropes will get a little loose each time. There is a limit to how much unhealthy habits or chemicals the hair can take so if you are suffering from frequent hair breakage, you might want to invest in a good hair oil.

It helps with hair loss (Lemongrass Oil)

For this particular type of hair oil that contains lemongrass oil, it possesses antifungal and antiviral properties so it is rather effective in relieving dry and dandruff scalp. As it also contains many vitamins and minerals, it is proven to strengthen hair follicles and prevent hair loss.

One word of advice, not all hair types are the same so it is recommended to read up on it before trying. Do test it first before doing a full application.

It protects from UV ray damage (Argan Oil)

Argan Oil is my favorite among the different types of hair oil. It is derived from nuts produced from argan trees and the nuts are really pretty. It has a dark golden yellowish shell. Really special. And here I am, going nuts over nuts. Puns intended. Hahaha.

The oil that is produced from the argan nuts is rich in fatty acids, antioxidants and vitamin E. And a bonus, it protects your hair from UV ray damage too.

What I usually do with my argan oil is, I will pour a few drops on my hands and apply on my towel dry hair, only on the lower ends or the ends. Thereafter, blow-dry the hair to about 80% dry, normal temperature, it will greatly reduce the frizz and the entire hair will look a lot better than before. It works as a quick anti-frizz fix.

In conclusion, from my own experience, hair oil has saved my hair from being damaged by heat. I have nothing but compliments for it. If you have hair breakage, use hair oil to moisturize the hair and strengthen the bonds. If you’re using high heat to blow-dry the hair, use a hair oil so that it can protect the hair from the heat.

I strongly advise against using high heat though. Yes, it shortens the time taken for the hair to dry. At what cost? Your hair condition. And the money needs to do treatments to get the condition back. And that’s exactly the reason why they said time is money.
